(July 12), In Gautam Gambhir’s Team India, Virat Kohli and other seniors might not play big part anymore, feels Dale Steyn
Dale Steyn stated that Team India will no longer have a significant role for veterans like Virat Kohli, arguing that the game needs aggressive players like Gautam Gambhir. Gautam Gambhir is a huge fan of Dale Steyn, the legendary pacer from South Africa.
Steyn is certain that Gambhir will infuse the Indian dressing room with his aggression. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah formally introduced Gambhir as India’s head coach on Tuesday.
The upcoming series between India and Sri Lanka will mark Gambhir’s coaching debut on the international scene. The two-time ICC World Cup champion took over for Rahul Dravid, who, in his final assignment, led Team India, led by Virat Kohli, to their second T20 world championship.
It’s interesting to note that Gambhir has no formal coaching experience in cricket competitions. The Indian Premier League (IPL) teams Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are coached by the former batter for India.
In Gambhir’s final season with the team, the Shreyas Iyer-led KKR team won their third IPL championship this year. Following KKR’s historic trophy victory under Gambhir’s leadership, the renowned cricket player emerged as the clear favorite to succeed Dravid as India’s next head coach.
Former South African pacer Styen expressed his opinion that aggressive players who can play the game a “little bit harder” are what the world of cricket needs with the arrival of Gambhir.
The veteran fast bowler from Proteas previously acknowledged that the current team’s senior players won’t be heavily involved in the Gambhir era. Following India’s World Cup victory, captain Rohit Sharma, batting legend Virat Kohli, and seasoned all-around player Ravindra Jadeja have already said goodbye to T20I cricket.
‘He’s going to take that into the dressing room with guys like Virat Kohli
I think Gautam Gambhir is fantastic. I adore his assertiveness. I like that he’s one of the few Indians I’ve ever played against who has returned the favor.
I believe he will bring that into the locker room with players like Virat and a few other older players who may not be as important. I’m not entirely certain. We need guys who play the game a little bit harder and with a little bit more aggression, not just in India but throughout the world of cricket as well, Styen said Star Sports.
‘He’s also streetwise, a very smart cricketer’
We all appear to compete against one another in the leagues and end up becoming good friends. I appreciate his fierceness on the field combined with his gentlemanly demeanor off it. He has an excellent cricket brain, is streetwise, and is a very intelligent cricketer. Thus, in my opinion, he will be excellent for them as well, Styen continued.
