An essential member of the Indian coaching team, Paras Mhambrey helped to put an end to the country’s 11-year wait for an ICC title. After traveling for three years, the former bowling coach for India was finally able to spend some time with his family, as Hindustan Times was able to interview.
Mhambrey talked about his experiences working with Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, his beliefs on Jasprit Bumrah’s natural leadership qualities, the development of Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, the depth of the Indian fast bowling unit’s bench, and more.
Has the T20 World Cup victory sunk in yet?
It required some time. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that comes only once in your career. The cyclone kept us stuck in the Caribbean for the first few days (after the T20 World Cup win). The meeting with the PM was the first thing we did when we eventually returned home. The kind of reception we received in Mumbai was unthinkable at that point. It elucidated the true significance of the Cup for the country. We all shared in this victory.
What worked for India in this World Cup?
I believed that our preparation was excellent. It was the result of extensive thought. I would go back in time a little bit, perhaps to the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. It was clearly unpleasant how things ended there in the semifinals.
We were devastated by that. From then on, things were different. All members of the team, including the support staff, myself, Vicky (Vikram Rathour), Rohit (Sharma), Rahul (Dravid), and some of the senior guys asking, “What is the best course of action?” How do we proceed from here? What adjustments are necessary? We’ve remained steadfast over the years. making it to the finals and semi-finals. That indicates that we are playing well.
